Skiing in Scotland from Edinburgh: the 5 ski resorts and how to get there

Updated · by the RTransfer team, local Edinburgh drivers

Part of our Taxi transfers from Edinburgh Airport to popular destinations guide

Quick answer

Scotland has five ski resorts, usually open from December to early April when there is snow. The closest to Edinburgh is Glenshee, about 2 hours by car. CairnGorm Mountain near Aviemore and Glencoe Mountain are about 2½ to 3 hours away, and Nevis Range and The Lecht about 3 hours. Glenshee and The Lecht have no winter public transport, so most people go by car.

When is the Scottish ski season?

All five resorts usually open from December to late March or early April, depending on snow. January and February are often the best months, and February half-term is peak time. Scottish snow changes quickly, so check each resort's daily snow report before you set off, and stay flexible with your dates if you can.

Which resort should I choose?

  • Glenshee is the closest to Edinburgh and the largest ski area in Scotland, a realistic day trip. The nearest village is Braemar, 9 miles away.
  • CairnGorm Mountain pairs well with a weekend in Aviemore. Its funicular railway reopened in June 2025.
  • Glencoe has the steepest and longest runs, and spectacular scenery on the drive through Rannoch Moor.
  • Nevis Range has Scotland's only gondola and good off-piste for experienced skiers.
  • The Lecht is the most family-friendly, with magic carpets for beginners. It is hard to reach without a car.

Just want to try it first? The Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend, on the edge of Edinburgh, has dry slopes all year.

Getting there with your skis

  • Roads: the A93 to Glenshee and the A9 to Aviemore can close in heavy snow. Check road and resort updates before leaving.
  • Public transport: CairnGorm can be reached by train to Aviemore then bus, and Nevis Range by bus from Fort William. Glenshee and The Lecht have no winter bus.
  • By private transfer: no driving on winter roads after a day on the slopes. Our estate cars and people carriers take skis, boards and boots, and the price is fixed before you go.
