Part of our Choosing an Edinburgh Airport transfer guide
Quick answer
For families flying into Edinburgh with young children, choose a pre-booked transfer that fits child seats before you arrive. RTransfer fits baby seats, child seats and boosters free on request, for the ages you tell us when you book, in a car with room for prams and luggage. Rank taxis and app rides do not guarantee a child seat; under UK rules, in a taxi or private hire car without one, under-3s may travel unrestrained in the rear and older children must use an adult belt.

The rules for children in taxis and private hire cars
UK law makes an exception for licensed taxis and private hire vehicles when the right child seat is not available:
- Under 3 years: may travel without a child seat, but only in the rear.
- 3 years and over (up to 135cm tall): must use an adult seat belt in the rear.
Legal is not the same as safe. A fitted child seat is much safer, which is why we fit them for free.

Tell us each child's age (and weight if you know it) when you book. The driver fits the seats before you arrive.
Picking the right car for a family
- 2 adults, 2 children, normal luggage: a saloon or estate, £48 to the city centre.
- With a pram and big cases: an estate (3–4 large bags) or a people carrier.
- 5–6 people: a people carrier, from £60. 7–8: a minibus or V-Class, from £85.

Why families choose a pre-booked transfer
After a long flight with children, there is no queue, no hunting for the car and no squeezing into a car that is too small. The driver waits in arrivals with your name and helps with bags. Read Edinburgh Airport transfers for families.
Frequently asked questions
Which Edinburgh Airport transfer is best for families with child seats?
A pre-booked transfer that fits child seats before you arrive. RTransfer fits baby seats, child seats and boosters free on request, in a car sized for prams and luggage.
Do taxis at Edinburgh Airport have child seats?
Not guaranteed. UK rules allow children to travel in taxis and private hire cars without a child seat (under-3s in the rear only, older children with an adult belt), so book a transfer that fits one.
Do I pay extra for child seats?
Not with RTransfer: child seats are free on request. Tell us the children's ages when you book.
