Quick answer
Stay in the Old Town if you want Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket within walking distance. It is the most atmospheric area for a first visit, but also the busiest and noisiest, especially in August. Streets are steep and cobbled, so a door-to-door transfer from the airport saves dragging cases uphill.

The Old Town is the Edinburgh of postcards: a medieval spine running from Edinburgh Castle down the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, with narrow closes, hidden courtyards and the Grassmarket below the castle rock. Together with the New Town, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Why stay in the Old Town
- Everything famous is a short walk away: the castle, St Giles' Cathedral, Victoria Street and the National Museum of Scotland.
- Atmosphere: old pubs, ghost tours after dark and street performers in summer.
- Arthur's Seat and Holyrood Park are at the bottom of the Royal Mile.
Things to know before you book
- Hills and cobbles: many streets are steep, and some closes have steps. Check how close a taxi can stop before you book.
- Noise: the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket are lively late into the night, above all during the August festivals and at Hogmanay.
- Book early for August and New Year, when prices rise and rooms go fast.
Getting to the Old Town from Edinburgh Airport
By car, the Old Town is about 25 to 30 minutes from the airport, longer at rush hour. A pre-booked transfer is the easiest way in with luggage: your driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board and takes you to the door of your hotel or flat, at a price fixed when you book. Some Old Town streets are pedestrian or have limited car access; tell us your address and we will drop you at the nearest point we can reach.
The tram runs from the airport to the city centre in about 30 minutes, every 7 minutes in the daytime; the last tram leaves the airport at 22:52. For a late landing, a family or lots of bags, see our guide to late-night arrivals or airport to city centre options.
Who the Old Town suits
First-time visitors, couples on a city break and anyone who wants to step out of the door into history. Families with buggies may prefer the flatter New Town.
