Part of our Edinburgh Airport taxi fares 2026 guide
Quick answer
Tipping taxi and private hire drivers in Scotland is not required, but it is customary to tip around 10% of the fare, or to round up, if you are happy with the service. Many drivers accept a tip by card or contactless as well as cash. RTransfer prices never include a hidden service charge.

Is tipping expected?
No. In Scotland, as in the rest of the UK, tipping is a thank-you for good service, not part of the fare. Drivers will not expect a tip from every passenger, and you should never feel pressured.
How much is normal?
- Around 10% of the fare is the usual guide for a good journey.
- Rounding up to the nearest pound or few pounds is common for short trips.
- A bit more if the driver went out of their way: carrying heavy luggage, waiting through a long delay or helping with children and car seats.
- Nothing if the service was poor.

How to tip
Cash is the simplest way, and many taxis in Scotland also accept tips by card or contactless. If you booked and paid in advance, you can simply hand your driver something at the end of the journey. See how to pay for your transfer.
