Wheelchair-accessible taxis and transport from Edinburgh Airport

Updated · by the RTransfer team, local Edinburgh drivers

Part of our Edinburgh Airport transfer services and vehicles guide

Quick answer

RTransfer has access to one or two wheelchair-accessible vehicles for Edinburgh Airport transfers, bookable with at least 72 hours’ notice. At shorter notice, Edinburgh’s main black cab firms run fully wheelchair-accessible fleets, trams are step-free and every Lothian bus has a wheelchair space. Folding wheelchairs can travel in the boot of any of our cars.

Black cabs

Forever Edinburgh, the city's official visitor guide, says the entire fleets of the two main black cab firms, City Cabs and Central Taxis, are wheelchair accessible, with over 900 taxis between them. You can take one from the airport rank or book ahead with either firm.

Trams and buses

All Edinburgh trams are designed to be fully wheelchair accessible, with ramps or lifts at stops and two wheelchair spaces on every tram. Every Lothian bus, including the Airlink 100, has at least one wheelchair space and a boarding ramp, and drivers are trained to recognise the Sunflower and Thistle Assistance Cards.

Private hire with a folding wheelchair

If you can transfer from your wheelchair into a car seat, any of our cars works well: the folded chair travels in the boot and the driver helps with bags. Tell us when you book so we leave space and allow extra time.

Our wheelchair-accessible vehicles

If you need to stay seated in your wheelchair, we have access to one or two wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Because there are only a few, we need at least 72 hours' notice to book one. Tell us the type and size of your wheelchair and how many people are travelling, and we will confirm. Guide dogs and other assistance dogs always travel free; see our policy on assistance dogs.

Help at the airport

Book special assistance with your airline before you fly; they arrange help through the airport from the aircraft to arrivals. Meet and greet then means your driver is waiting in the arrivals hall. See how meet and greet works and choosing the right car for your luggage and equipment.
